If she gets anywhere close to what she’s asking, it will be the priciest home sale Silver Lake has ever seen. The current crown belongs to Silvertop, a futuristic John Lautner masterpiece that sold to former Beats Electronics President Luke Wood for $8.55 million in 2014. According to multiple sources, Katy Perry’s net worth is between $330-$350 million.

A man who claims he sold his home to Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom while heavily medicated is going to trial for his lawsuit against the real estate sale. “Wescott presented no persuasive evidence that he lacked capacity to enter into a real estate contract between June 10, 2020, and June 18, 2020, the days during which he negotiated and signed the contract,” the judgment read. Carl Westcott, the guy who sold them the house (and started businesses including Flowers!), was 80 years old at the time (he’s still alive—eighty-three now!) and had just had back surgery.

Almost immediately, Westcott appears to have had second thoughts about the deal. On July 22, 2020, according to a deposition, the 84-year-old contacted his real estate agent and asked about cancelling the contract, citing capital gains taxes and his girlfriend’s reluctance to move again. Two days later, an attorney hired by Perry’s business manager contacted Westcott, informing him that Perry and Bloom still wanted to buy the house and reminding him of his contractual obligation to complete the sale. Westcott filed a lawsuit against the couple’s business manager, Bernie Gudvi, in August 2020, alleging he was heavily medicated and not of sound mind when he contracted with Perry for the $15-million sale. Shortly after the contract was signed, Westcott and his lawyers alleged that he was unable to properly review the contract because he had been on “several intoxicating pain-killing opiates” at the time. Westcott’s medical reports showed that none of his doctors found he lacked capacity to engage in any action before the sales contract or for more than a year afterward.

The business proposal came just days after Westcott, who has Huntington's disease, underwent a six-hour back surgery. Upon release from the hospital, Westcott was prescribed numerous medications for his recovery that allegedly left him in an intoxicated state. Judge ruled that Westcott knew what he was doing when he signed the papers.

Katy Perry's daughter Daisy Dove Bloom, two in August, has been growing up close to the ocean in Montecito, Santa Barbara with Archie and Lilbet Cambridge for playmates. Now her parents, Katy Perry and fiance Orlando Bloom are making the move from LA permanent. The couple, who were first linked romantically in January 2016, got engaged in February 2019, and welcomed daughter Daisy, 1, in August 2020, felt the quieter setting would be a great place for their child to grow up, the Bloom insider noted. Dirt reported that Perry's property is located in an area of the city popular with A-listers, citing Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher as past residents. At the time, a Bloom insider explained, "Katy grew up in Santa Barbara and always loved it there. Orlando has come to love it as well. He always enjoyed Malibu, but finds Montecito even better since it's much more private." The outside of their pad is just as beautiful as the inside, and Orlando is clearly in his element with huge garages.

Have you seen the singer’s favourite mirror selfie spot?

Let’s say, for argument’s sake, you forced a bunch of nuns to sell you a convent after they begged you in court to “please stop.” Would you then, years later, insist on buying a house from an 84-year-old veteran who definitely does not want to sell it to you? Eight years after she emerged victorious from a trial involving a group of aging nuns, Perry has won yet another bewildering real-estate battle. This one concerns Carl Westcott, the multimillionaire founder of Flowers, who claims he was not of sound mind when he agreed to sell Perry his Montecito mansion in 2020. Westcott said in his lawsuit that he had a six-hour back surgery several days before being presented with the proposed real estate contract and had been prescribed powerful medications that left him “intoxicated” at signing time. In 2014, Perry offered $14.5 million to purchase the sprawling estate belonging to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, an order of nuns who had pooled their money to buy the swank property in 1972 but had mostly vacated the property since then, having…gone to meet Jesus. Three years prior, in 2011, the Archdiocese had forced the five remaining nuns to move out against their will and then agreed to sell the property to Perry.

Katy Perry wins a victory in battle to buy nuns’ convent in Los Feliz

But the Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez insisted the medieval Spanish-Gothic-Tudor estate go to Katy Perry, who was willing to pay for the property in cash. Meanwhile, the case is reminiscent of the 2015 legal suit Perry was involved in with Catholic nuns known as the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary located in Los Feliz.

The duo, however, celebrated another milestone and shared the news of the birth of their baby girl, Daisy Dove Bloom. Despite the logistical nightmares served up by the virus, Perry managed to release her album, Smile, and even continued her role as a judge on American Idol, the singing competition TV series, from her makeshift home studio. A Midwestern boy at heart, he was raised in St. Louis and studied journalism at the University of Missouri. Before joining The Times as an intern in 2017, he wrote for the Columbia Missourian and Politico Europe. In addition to 15 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, there’s a great room with stenciled beams and a lower-level lounge with French doors and a spiral staircase.

The 37-year-old shared the five bedroom, five bathroom estate with her fiancé Orlando Bloom and their daughter Daisy, and even appeared on American Idol from her living room during the coronavirus pandemic. Awarded the Garden Journalist of the Year accolade at the Property Press Awards in 2021, she has a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford and a lifelong love of homes, interiors and gardens. Her first memories include planting potatoes with her grandfather and drawing houses.

As of 2022, Perry and fam are living in a gorgeous Montecito estate in Santa Barbara County! Katy and hubby, Orlando Bloom, purchased the home in 2020 for $14.2 million to act as home base for their growing family. The estate occupies over 9,200 square feet and boasts eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. In response, Perry and Bloom wrote a letter to Westcott letting him know how much they loved the home and wanted to purchase the estate for more money than what he paid for it. Westcott, who served in the US Army as a 101st Airborne service member, had purchased the home that May 29 with the intent to live in there “for the rest of his life,” court documents state. Looks like Katy Perry is in hot water again over real estate — several years after she sparred with two nuns over an 8-acre Los Feliz, California spread.

Photos also show a kids' treehouse and swing in the backyard, which has canyon views. It seems Orlando and Katy have a home office space at their family mansion, and the actor used it one day to join a virtual awards ceremony. The appearance revealed his functional wooden shelving unit filled with books and a display cabinet with glass front. The room also has a large door made from stained wood, and the star sat in front of it. A cream sectional with fluffy cushions and a matching throw blanket sits beside large French glass doors, trimmed with wood, that open up to the patio. The wooden coffee table and the light grey rug underneath give the space a cosy vibe, also enhanced by a stone fireplace and the flat-screen TV on the wood-panelled console.

The purchase was widely reported, and the pop star and her fiancée Orlando Bloom promptly made the 9-acre compound their main residence. With dark walls, a plush taupe rug, and gold light fixtures that hang from the ceiling, the space follows a moody palette. The grey velvet sofas, rust-coloured patterned curtains, and a golden bar cart add to the space. In the midst of a pandemic, the room also doubled as a home studio for Perry.

Decks, patios and balconies survey the grounds outside, which include parking for 50 cars and a swimming pool overlooking the city. Known formally as the Canfield-Moreno Estate, it was commissioned by silent film star Antonio Moreno and his wife, oil heiress Daisy Canfield Moreno. During their stay, the 22,000-square-foot mansion and its trio of guesthouses were used as a boarding school for orphaned girls during the Great Depression.

A seven-day trial took place between Sept. 27 and Oct. 5, with closing arguments on Nov. 3. A Los Angeles judge agreed Katy Perry should be able to purchase a $15 million home in Montecito, California, after its owner sought to rescind the sales contract, claiming he was of "unsound mind" when he'd signed it. Silverman set out to learn more about the designer who was married to silent film actress Jetta Goudal and who had designed the costumes for the first Ben Hur, as well as residences for Hollywood luminaries like James Stewart, Norma Shearer and Bing Crosby. Grieve’s former accountant offered Silverman a treasure trove of photos, sketches and memorabilia from the 1920s onward — packed in boxes inside an Anaheim storage unit for decades. Silverman needed two cars to transfer all the boxes from Orange County to his home in Brentwood.

Perry and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, outbid journalist Maria Shriver for Westcott’s home in 2020, and the elderly Texan veteran and entrepreneur signed a counteroffer for the sale in July of that year, less than two months after he bought it. They finalized the $14.2 million sale in 2021, but no one has yet moved into the house. In August 2023, Westcott filed a complaint against the couple’s business manager, Bernie Gudvi, seeking to void the sale contract. It wasn’t the only time Hollister’s ties to nuns made her a key player in a coveted piece of real estate. In 2015, she was locked in a bitter legal battle with pop star Katy Perry and the head of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles over the right to buy a prized 8-acre convent in Los Feliz with 30,000 square feet of living space, a pool, tower and prayer house. And for whatever reason, this is not the first time Perry has faced a dispute with elderly people over pricey real estate.

This apparently isn’t the first time she’s shilled for Tesla, either, which leads me to wonder what this company and its man-child of a founder actually have over her. In 2017 a judge in LA ruled that Perry had the right to purchase the place, but since the Catholic Church needs the pope’s approval for sales over a certain amount, they had to run it up the…whatever the Catholic version of a flagpole is. His Holiness said Perry couldn’t have it until she figured out what to do about the still-in-use chapel on the property, like find a replacement venue. Meanwhile, the singer successfully sued Hollister for interfering in her purchase, and Hollister later filed for bankruptcy. Some days after signing, Westcott emailed the company representing the sale and stated that he actually didn’t want to move, and then lawyers got involved. He filed a complaint in August 2020 and is now suing Perry and Bloom’s business manager.

The “Teenage Dream” hitmaker purchased the mansion for herself and fiancé Orlando Bloom in July 2020 from the founder of Flowers. But the entrepreneur tried to call off the sale, alleging he was mentally incapacitated at the time of the agreement due to pain pills. Judge Joseph Lipner weighed in on the breach-of-contract dispute in a proposed statement of decision filed in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday, obtained by USA TODAY on Wednesday.

Man claimed he 'had not been himself' on pain killers when he sold his Montecito property to Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom

Following his refusal to sell his home, Westcott received another letter from an attorney representing Gudvi, Perry and Bloom, per Westcott's lawsuit. The letter stated Perry and Bloom were "not willing to walk away from purchasing Mr. Westcott’s home and he is obligated to complete the sale." Westcott's legal team had a doctor, whose focus is geriatric psychiatry, testify that the homeowner was cognitively impaired when he entered the contract. In his Nov. 7 decision, Lipner wrote that the court "did not find his expert opinion of lack of capacity supported, credible or persuasive." Two weeks later, he filed a complaint seeking a cancellation of the contract, to which Gudvi filed a cross-complaint claiming a breach of contract two days afterward.

The contract that [Westcott] signed to sell his home is therefore void or voidable,” per Yahoo. According to Westcott's 2020 complaint, the business proposal came days after the entrepreneur had undergone surgery. He realized he "had not been himself due to the combination of his age, frailty, Huntington’s disease, the six-hour surgery and especially the intoxicating effects of the opiate painkillers he had been taking several times each day," per his complaint. In July 2020, Westcott and Gudvi entered into an agreement for him to sell the property for $15 million. "Today’s proposed decision is clear," Eric Rowen, an attorney representing Gudvi, said in a statement to USA TODAY on Wednesday.

A lawyer for Perry and Bloom then advised him that the couple was not willing to walk away and is obligated to complete the sale. “Everyone wants to know what happened and why this or why that & I will answer those questions someday, but in the meantime, I’ll say this. I never expected to win, but I did, I was so grateful and I know that people are feeling like I let them down,” they said in 2023, per The Sun.

She added, “Before Carl’s health continues to deteriorate I wanted to share some of our favorite happier memories with him and use his story, to share with you information on Huntington's and to bring light to this terrible disease! After alerting the buyers to his change of heart, Westcott was given a letter from Perry and Bloom describing the couple's interest in purchasing the home, according to his complaint. A second, $1.85-million loan will eventually be forgiven, as long as the landlord adheres to the terms of his agreement with the city, housing officials said. Hillside Villa had served for 30 years as affordable housing as part of an agreement with city officials. Those rent restrictions expired five years ago, prompting Botz to increase rents, in some cases doubling or tripling the amount. Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, whose district includes Chinatown, said this week that she had persuaded the owner to delay the start of the six-year repayment period by six months. She said she also intends to use $250,000 of her office’s discretionary funds to erase the first year of unpaid rent debt at Hillside Villa, a move that could delay the start of the repayment process until late 2025.

After spending close to 15 years in the House of Nanking kitchen, as a child and teenager in between school, Kathy naturally developed a passion for her family’s business and most importantly, for cooking. She now helps manage the restaurant while her mother Lily at the age of 71 still works every single day. Peter now splits his time between running House of Nanking and Fang, the sister restaurant he opened in San Francisco with Kathy in 2009 who serves as Executive Chef.

Fang says it was a surprise to her that her father took to filming quite easily. The filming took place in early summer 2022, five days a week, for six weeks. Fang said she didn’t want to worry her dad about the schedule and resisted briefing him too much on what would happen during the shoots. In 1997, Peter and Lily expanded the restaurant moving the kitchen to the back and added 25 more seats to meet the high demand.

The Grand Star Jazz Club hosts a variety of live band and dance nights. Opened on Spring Street in January 2018, the speakeasy-style Apotheke features a “prescription list” of cocktails made by bartenders in pharmacist coats. In March 2018, Highland Park Brewery opened a 9,000 square-foot taproom across from Los Angeles State Historic Park.

Or, you can go to Wonder Bakery in Central Plaza, for a variety of sweet and savory pastries. Night owls will want to head to Full House Seafood on Hill Street, which is open late on weekends. The Metro Gold Line drops off visitors and residents about a block from Central Plaza via the Chinatown Station.

August Brown covers pop music, the music industry and nightlife policy at the Los Angeles Times. Tenant activists responded by urging the council to purchase Hillside Villa using eminent domain, a process used by government agencies to acquire private property. Protesters went to city officials’ homes to demand they force a sale. In 2022, the council voted to begin an effort to purchase the building.

I first came across Cali Love Pie on Tiffany Hinton Jefferson‘s @blackownedfoodla Instagram account. The shop, located at the corner of Western Avenue and Venice Boulevard, celebrated its one-year anniversary on April 20. This mural on the side of Castelar Elementary School is by artist Shi Yan Zhang. It's called "The Party at Lan-Ting," and it depicts famous Chinese calligrapher Wang Xi Zhi ( , Jin Dynasty) hosting a party where he wrote the preface to a poetry collection that became a model for centuries of Chinese calligraphers. The Central Plaza is the nucleus of Chinatown, and on sunny mornings you can stroll through and see seniors playing Chinese chess and mah-jong while they sip on tea and socialize. If you happen to be in Los Angeles during Chinese New Year or the Autumn Moon Festival, Central Plaza hosts all types of traditional events from lion dances to lantern festivals.

The World's Finest Reviews "DC Showcase Constantine: The House of Mystery"

constantine the house of mystery

And later become a recurring character in Blue Devil and The Sandman. DC's Vertigo imprint began a new ongoing series in May 2008, written by Lilah Sturges and Bill Willingham. It features at least one different story each issue, told by people trapped in a "purgatory-like house".[15][16] The series ended in October 2011 with issue #42. In terms of the release’s audio and video quality, it’s a pretty good overall presentation. Outside of occasional artifacting and some macroblocking, it’s a fine looking transfer, with any blemishes barely a noticeable blip. The audio is just as good, if not better, with every word of dialogue and beat of action coming through crystal clear and no issues whatsoever.

It’s an approach to the character and material that almost certainly wouldn’t have been taken had Blue Beetle been a full-length movie rather than a short. But that’s always been the great thing about DC Showcase. The creative teams are free to experiment and take risks, with the results almost always speaking for themselves.

Releases by Date

The Martian Manhunter was again relegated to back-up status during this time. Animation continues to glean beloved characters from DC’s robust library for the popular DC Showcase line of animated shorts, this time highlighting characters as diverse as Constantine, Kamandi, the Losers and Blue Beetle in this new compilation. The first issue under Orlando would be a reprint issue of old horror/suspense stories, as the new direction would truly begin with #175 (July–August 1968). The issue would introduce a new figure to the series, Cain, the "able care taker" of the House of Mystery who would introduce nearly all stories that would run in the series before its cancellation.[5] Cain would also host the spin-off humor series Plop!

Videos

As such, the creative team immersed themselves in the character’s classic comics. That being said, to quickly touch on the short’s finale (while keeping details as vague as possible), it can be read a couple different ways. In one way, it does act as it’s own solid wrap with that typical House of Mystery twist fans of the comic likely remember. Another way, however, is that the finale could be read as a hint toward something bigger on the horizon. The series would not be complete without the fabulous artwork of Riley Rossmo.

Universe

You can follow him on Twitter and Bluesky at @JulesChinGreene. The Losers was directed by Milo Neuman, who also directed the Blue Beetle short, and the two couldn’t be more different in tone. Blue Beetle is a fun send-up of 1960’s superhero cartoons, particularly one about a marvelous arachnid.

If you love this book, then you can catch more adventures with Constantine in Tynion’s Justice League Dark series that followed this one. In the mid-1960s, the series was revamped to include superhero stories. From The House of Mystery #143 (June 1964) to 155 (December 1966), "J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars" headlined the book, as his back-up feature from Detective Comics was moved to The House of Mystery. This was followed with the introduction of "Dial H for Hero" in issue #156 (January 1966),[3] which took over as headliner until issue #173 (March–April 1968).

Jules Chin Greene writes about comics for DC.com, and his work can also be found at Nerdist, Popverse and Multiverse of Color.

First series

In 1986–1987, DC comics published a new series, Elvira's House of Mystery. One issue of this series, issue #3, was released without Comics Code Approval and contained significant implied nudity, but subsequent editorial comments in later issues stated that the experiment in releasing an unapproved issue was not considered successful. James Tynion IV, of course, would go on to write Batman, where he had a hand in creating characters such as Punchline, Clownhunter, Ghost-Maker, the Gardener and Miracle Molly. Tynion is also known for his horror stories, with The Nice House on the Lake being one of the most haunting comics I’ve ever read.

Storyline

Rossmo invents an entirely new visual language for Constantine that’s utterly infectious on the page. The art’s exaggerated proportions and expressions lend a playfulness to Constantine’s supernatural experiences. The House of Mystery appears mainly in various Vertigo titles, especially those tied into Neil Gaiman's Sandman; it has appeared briefly in Resurrection Man. Something called the House of Mystery appeared in 52 #18, where it seems to have been used for some time as a base for a team of detectives called the Croatoan Society, which counts both Detective Chimp and Ralph Dibny among its members. It is unclear if the Croatoan's House of Mystery is meant to be the same as the original House of Mystery, a post-Infinite Crisis version of the original House of Mystery, or simply a different location with the same name. Cain's name appeared on this house's mailbox, implying some sort of connection to the original House.

CONSTANTINE and all related characters and elements are ™ and © DC. IGN exclusively revealed a new trailer for the upcoming anthology this past weekend. Yet we knew that the new Constantine short was coming after Warner Bros. teased it as part of DC Fandome 2021.

Home Entertainment, and inspired by characters and stories from the iconic DC Universe, the all-new quartet of DC Showcase shorts are produced by Rick Morales (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise, Injustice). Jim Krieg is producer, and Sam Register is executive producer. Please note the updates above do not list the regular near-daily updates across the site, which include updates to assorted releases, image galleries, backstage/extra content and more. The updates also do not include content posted on Twitter and YouTube. The House of Mystery is the name of several horror, fantasy, and mystery comics anthologies published by DC Comics.
